Randy Dorian, the principal inventor of multiple methods for immunoisolation of cells, is motivated both by friendship with diabetics and care for the monkey to the left. "Molly" is a lesser spot-nose guenon (Cercopithecus petaurista) native to Africa. She has IDDM (as do many old-world monkeys).
Randy and his wife Camille inject insulin several times a day, something Molly has learned to accept. She does not understand why she cannot have fruit like the other monkeys in the family.
When the evidence from pre clinical animal experiments appears conclusive, we anticipate that Molly will be the first old world monkey to receive an Islet Sheet implant.
Randy's interest in monkeys is very strong. Click here to see his web 'zine, Monkey Matters.
